The Akita Inu is a giant breed from the mountains of northern Japan. They may appear calm and reserved, but beneath their thick fur and curled tail is a large, powerful dog. Akitas are loyal and affectionate with their family but less so with strangers or other animals. Without proper socialization or training, Akitas can become dangerous around people outside their usual circle. Extensive training can mitigate the risks associated with many breeds on this list.
